Making it a Habit
“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” Edgar Degas
I daydream about painting huge abstract florals from real bouquets. All sorts of luscious flowers take their turn in a vintage pitcher set atop a tall antique table near my canvas and paints. Bathed in morning sunlight traveling through my studio window panes, their long shadows reach out toward my palette, as if they would paint themselves.
Each abstract and floral painting is a step toward realizing the dream. Painting by painting, I learn more about myself and the object of my desire. I look, I sense, I feel…as I strive to portray an essence of their intangible beauty, rather than imitate their unique qualities.
