When I go to my subjects’ homes to take their pictures, I have one request… don’t look at the camera. But once in a while the pull of the lens wins. In this case, I found that I needed to make an exception as E’s direct gaze offers a significant hint of character, it’s been paramount to her success in a small town. I juxtaposed the indoors out to highlight her grand view of the lake. In my mind, just showing it through a window would not fully communicate the magnetic pull of her ancestral lineage, which had called E to return home after many years away.
