This work in progress is a great example of that quote by Vincent Van Gogh. Sometimes it’s really hard to understand or ‘know’ why a piece is working or not working. It comes down to listening to your intuition. In this particular abstract, there are parts that are speaking to me strongly and others that are … well, not so much. I have been eyeballing this painting for a while now. I like the parts that are working so much that I don’t want to rush the parts that aren’t. I want to take my time on this one and suss out how to bring it together.  I’m savoring the process. Then…

Quiddity WIP

Part of that process is rotating the painting to see what maybe hasn’t jumped out at me yet. I actually rotate my paintings often while I am painting abstracts. It’s really quite interesting what a difference it can make to your composition and the happy accidents that occur. A shape that wasn’t working in one direction, may work in another or weigh your painting more effectively. It’s also a good way to not get stuck in a composition too early on…
